Systemwide Upgrade Certificates are available for Diamond and Platinum Medallion members to select as a Choice Benefit gift. delta SWU have been improved so when redeeming on any Delta flight:

You can always waitlist for an upgrade if it is not available at time of booking.
If you do not clear prior to departure, you will now be automatically added to the standby list.
You will automatically clear for an upgrade if there are empty seats available.
Also, you can now redeem your SWU Certificates on Air France and KLM:
These upgrades are redeemable on most transatlantic flights operated by Air France. And as before, they continue to be valid on all KLM – Royal Dutch Airlines.

Medallion member must contact Delta to book the upgrade reservation.
Seats are subject to availability and may not be available on all flights or in all markets.
Waitlist and standby not permitted.

Valid on all flights operated by KLM.
One-way upgrade from published Economy fares in M, B, S, or X class to Business class. Valid for travel through May 31, 2011.
One-way upgrade from published Economy fares in Y, B, M, or U class to Business class. Valid for travel on and after June 01, 2011.

Redemptions on Air France
Valid on most transatlantic flights operated by Air France.1
One-way upgrade from Economy when booked in Y,B, K, or M class to Premium economy class. Valid for travel through May 31, 2011.

Applicable Fare Classes: For travel within North America, certificate may be used to upgrade only on published coach fares booked in Y, B, M, H, Q or K class. Certificate may not be used to upgrade other published coach fares, including fares booked in L, U or T class. For international travel, certificate may be used to upgrade only on published coach fares booked in Y, B or M class. Certificate may not be used to upgrade other published coach fares, including fares booked in H, Q, K, L, U or T class. For travel on KLM, certificate may be used to upgrade only on booking class in M, B, S or X class.
Travel on carriers other than Delta, when permitted, must be ticketed separately. Upgrade reservations on KLM operated flights must be booked by Delta.
