Iberia add more flights to Central American

Iberia has launched new flights to Central America.

These new flights will fly to San Salvador and Panama direct from Madrid. Previously these flights went via Guatemala.

Iberia now flies to four Central American countries including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Panama.

The flights to Central America from Iberia’s new Madrid Terminal 4 hub are all direct, and are timed to ensure easy convenient connections for passengers flying to or from Germany.

From Terminal 4 Iberia operates 13 flights each day to and from Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin and Dusseldorf. From Madrid Iberia flies to 17 Latin American cities and 4 destinations in the United States, to 10 cities in Africa and the Middle East, and to 35 in Spain.

The flights to Panama City and San Salvador will use the Airbus A-340/300 aircraft with a passenger capacity of 254 people. Iberia predicts passenger levels of around 40,000 to San Salvador and over 80,000 to Panama City next year.

With Central America increasing in popularity as a holiday destination Iberia is taking steps to improve connections with other countries within Central America.

“It is very pleasing for Central America and the whole travel industry to see Iberia making this investment in Central America and proves that the region is increasing in popularity. The whole region has so much to offer tourists and holidaymakers, it is important to have the infrastructure in place to cope with demand and make the whole of Central America easily accessible.” Said Nigel Thomas, Managing Director, Hidden Trails Limited

TAM and Lufthansa reciprocal frequent flyer benefits

TAM and Lufthansa signed a Memorandum of Understanding In the coming months, the two companies will examine various forms of cooperation. The first step will be the implementation of codesharing on domestic and international routes. Other possibilities include the optimization of the two companies' flight schedules and linking TAM's frequent flyer program, Fidelidade, with Lufthansa's Miles & More, as well as reciprocal sharing of VIP lounges in a number of airports.
For Marco Antonio Bologna, President of TAM, the partnership with Lufthansa is in line with the company's strategy to seek alliances with leading companies in destination markets. "We are going to explore possible synergies between the two companies' networks, and in doing so, we can offer new choices for flights in both Brazil and Germany."

"Both companies are distinguished as innovators and for their high levels of quality and credibility. Our customers will soon benefit from our cooperation," added Jens Bischof, Lufthansa's Vice President for the Americas.
Paulo Castello Branco, Vice President for Planning and Alliances, adds that TAM will have a local partner in the German market with a broad service network.

Currently, the Lufthansa group offers 20 flights a week between Sao Paulo and its three hubs in Frankfurt and Munich (Lufthansa), as well as Zurich (SWISS). Passengers coming from Brazil's economic metropolis arrive at their destinations in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa with only one stop, and rapid transfers. In addition, Lufthansa provides daily service to its Latin American destinations in Mexico, Caracas, Buenos Aires and Santiago, Chile (SWISS). In total, Lufthansa serves 192 destinations in 78 countries.

TACA/Lufthansa partners on ffp and lounge access

TACA and Lufthansa plan to cooperate closely in future under a memorandum of understanding signed by representatives of the two airlines. Their objective, among others, is to begin codesharing on national and international routes. With an eye on future cooperation, TACA and Lufthansa are also testing other benefits for their customers such as pooling frequent flyer programmes, closely coordinating their flight schedules and mutual lounge access.

"TACA is immensely pleased at the prospect of cooperation with one of the world's leading carriers like Lufthansa," observed Alex Benítez, TACA Vice President for Planning. "With the signing of this memorandum of understanding, we are committed to doing our utmost towards meeting the requirements of our customers and ensuring that better day-to-day service awaits them in future." Daniel Ratti, TACA President for Peru, is confident "that we will be able to offer additional services and a range of new connections that will strengthen our position in commercial air traffic. TACA is showing that it is always in the vanguiard in the airline business."

Lufthansa lays on daily flights ex Germany to Caracas, Mexico, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile (SWISS) in a total of 35 weekly connections between its domestic hubs and Latin American markets. With just one stopover and short connecting times, passengers from Latin America can fly to destinations across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Worldwide, Lufthansa serves 192 destinations in 78 countries.

From three hubs (in El Salvador, Costa Rica and Peru), TACA operates flights in an extensive network to 35 destinations in 20 countries across the American continent. Its modern fleet is equipped with new-generation Airbus A319, A320 and A321 jets noted for technical innovation, efficiency and safety, and all configured with Business Class. Additionally, TACA operates cargo, courier and mail services. The airline recently opened a new hub in Lima, which has expanded capacity from 160 to 230 flights weekly. Precision in its flight operations is reflected in the figures: Flight regularity in 2006 averaged 99.74 per cent; the airline's punctuality (OTP) record in the same year reached 91.91 per cent.

Alitalia Joins delta on trans-Atlantic route

Alitalia airlines,a member of the SkyTeam alliance, has joined the Air France-KLM Group and Delta airlines as a member of the airline industry's leading trans-Atlantic joint venture.

Through the four-way joint venture, passengers have convenient access to the world's largest trans-Atlantic network, which offers almost 250 flights and approximately 55,000 seats each day, now including 20 daily trans-Atlantic route to 5 U.S. destinations from Rome and Milan Malpensa airports.
Our customers can now choose between multiple gateways in the U.S. as well as in Europe, via Amsterdam Schiphol, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Rome Fiumicino."

Rome joins Amsterdam, Atlanta, Detroit, MSP, New York-JFK and Paris-CDG as the core hubs of the joint venture, with additional trans-Atlantic service from Cincinnati, Milan Malpensa, Memphis and Salt Lake City. Wherever traffic rights permit, the airlines offer customers codeshare service between the United States and the European Union, and in many cases beyond, creating one network for seamless airline-to-airline connections between points in North America and the European Union.

"Delta's partnership with Europe's leading airlines has been a great success and has enabled us to add new destinations and convenience for customers across the United States and Europe," said Delta CEO Richard Anderson. "The addition of Alitalia to our joint venture will further bolster our ability to optimize resources, protect revenues and provide more benefits for our employees and shareholders."

"The trans-Atlantic joint venture has been strengthened by the arrival of Alitalia, which adds the Italian market, the third biggest in Europe, to the JV and also gives it access to the Rome-Fiumicino airport," said Air France-KLM CEO Pierre-Henri Gourgeon. "The Italian airline, a SkyTeam member, is a strategic partner of Air France-KLM with which it already has joint venture agreements on its Italy-France and Italy-Netherlands routes. It is therefore natural that this successful partnership should continue with Alitalia's participation in the trans-Atlantic JV."

Governance of the joint venture will be equally shared between Alitalia, the Air France-KLM Group and Delta. Alitalia representatives will immediately join the joint venture's 11 working groups responsible for implementing and managing the agreement in the areas of network, revenue management, sales, product, frequent flyer, advertising/brand, cargo, operations, information technology, communications and finance. Delta to expand at Terminal 4 at JFK Airport

Delta airlines and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and JFK International Air Terminal LLC (JFKIAT) unveiled plans for the enhancement and expansion of Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport. The $1.2 billion project will create a state-of-the-art facility for New York's fastest growing global airline.

Terminal 4 Improvements and Customer Benefits

Currently, Delta operates predominantly out of Terminal 2 for domestic flights and Terminal 3 for international service. The expansion of Terminal 4 – which has been successfully managed by JFKIAT for over a decade – will replace the outdated Terminal 3 facilities to enhance the customer experience for the 11 million passengers Delta serves at JFK annually. Delta anticipates that customers will experience an improvement in operational performance through dual taxiways, resulting in reduced taxi times and better on-time performance. Delta is also upgrading its inter-terminal passenger connectors between Terminals 2 and 4 for faster transit between the facilities. Delta customers will further benefit from the airline's ability to continue expanding its international network, which currently includes non-stop service to 94 destinations from JFK and more than 1,200 weekly departures. International service includes non-stop service to Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, with new service being offered to Tokyo, Tel Aviv and Iceland among other destinations.

Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2010, with anticipated completion of phase one and relocation of Delta's Terminal 3 operations to Terminal 4 in May 2013. Delta's JFK terminal project includes the expansion of Concourse B at Terminal 4, with nine new international gates; the construction of a passenger connector between Terminal 2 and Terminal 4; expanded areas for baggage claim and Customs and Border Protection; and the demolition of Terminal 3 in May 2015. The Terminal 3 site will then be used for aircraft parking.

"The newly expanded and enhanced Terminal 4, one of many substantial investments we're making in New York, will provide significant benefits to our customers, employees and the city of New York for decades to come," said Delta Chief Executive Officer Richard Anderson. "Following a multi-year effort, we are very pleased to have reached a decision with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, JFKIAT and Schiphol USA. This plan allows us to move forward with the enhancement of our JFK hub, one that will showcase modern, welcoming facilities and meet the needs of the world's most competitive and largest aviation market."
"Ensuring reliable air transportation to and from New York City is crucial to strengthening our economy. And the decision by Delta Air Lines to expand its international terminal at Kennedy Airport will make it easier for even more people to travel to this city in the coming years," said New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. "Not only will this $1.2 billion project cement New York City's status as the nation's top travel destination, it will also create an additional 10,000 jobs over the next three years."

"This Delta-Port Authority announcement launches a billion dollar expanded and enhanced facility for JFK that will create new jobs and a state-of-the-art portal to the world's greatest city," said U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer. "JFK is the gateway to New York City. And with Delta flying non-stop to five continents, this new facility will enable travelers to fly to and from our great city with ease and comfort. Terminal 4 will greatly improve traveling for New Yorkers – and travelers across the globe – and showcase New York as the transportation hub of not only the nation, but the world."

AA 737 Sky Interior increase onboard comfort

Boeing delivered to American Airlines its first Next-Generation 737-800 featuring the all-new Boeing Sky Interior (BSI). The new aircraft marks a major milestone in American's commitment to improving and modernizing the customer experience through the execution of its fleet renewal plan.
The Boeing Sky Interior is designed to increase customer comfort onboard and is an important part of American's ongoing initiative to modernize the look and feel of its 737 fleet interiors. The 737-800 BSI aircraft are a strategic part of American's commitment to invest in products and services that make the travel experience more contemporary and innovative for customers.

The new 737-800 BSI interior offers several unique features, including larger overhead bins – modeled after the 787 Dreamliner's pivoting bins – that pivot down and out. The innovative design allows the bins to hold 48 more bags than standard overhead bins and four more than current non-BSI aircraft with larger bins. Sculpted sidewalls provide customers with a contemporary feeling of spaciousness and updated window reveals make the windows appear larger. Brighter and longer-lasting LED lighting can be programmed to create different effects during the flight such as a soft blue sky overhead. Intuitive placement of switches and call buttons and improved sound quality are innovative features that will enhance the customer experience. Additionally, the new 737s offer 16 First Class seats and 144 in Economy Class for a total of 160 seats on each aircraft.

From 2007 through 2011, American Airlines expects to invest more than $5.5 billion in new aircraft and onboard and facility enhancement projects to improve the customer experience.
"American Airlines has made a significant investment to enrich the flying experience for our customers through the purchase of new aircraft and the refurbishment of our existing fleet," said Virasb Vahidi, American's Chief Commercial Officer. "At American, we are focused on providing a differentiated customer experience, with a distinct focus on best delivering what premium customers value most – world-class products and services. The delivery of the first 737-800 with the new Boeing Sky Interior is our most recent step to deliver on this commitment."

"This new airplane will be a great addition to American's existing 737 fleet," said Marlin Dailey, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "American Airlines is leveraging all the performance benefits of the Next-Generation 737 to enhance its competitive position, while providing a new, more comfortable and inviting interior."

As part of its fleet renewal plan, American began taking delivery of new Boeing 737-800s without BSI in April 2009. The airline received 31 737-800s in 2009, 45 in 2010 and plans to receive 15 in 2011, 28 in 2012 and 11 beginning in 2013.

To provide consistency within the travel experience and further elevate customer comfort onboard, American is updating its initial fleet of Boeing 737s, the last of which was delivered in 2001, to match the new 737 deliveries without the BSI feature. The interior renovations include the installation of new customized First and Economy Class seats, new cabin interiors, updated inflight entertainment systems and bigger overhead bins to provide more storage throughout the aircraft. American is also updating the interior of its 757 fleet, which will include a new look-and-feel throughout the cabin. Both projects are being handled in-house by American employees at the airline's Maintenance and Engineering base located in Tulsa, Okla.
